Hope for the best, plan for the worst.
We (Research and Education Team of Disaster Mitigation Technology for Marine City) belong to Department of Ocean Engineering (OE) of Pukyong National University (PKNU), which locates in Busan, the dynamic marine city in Korea. This project is funded by the Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea during the period of 2020 to 2027.
The vision (development of human resources and technology relevant to disaster mitigation for marine city) is the central part of OE's focus - educating students who become a major axis for the development of the human being's cultures based on ocean.
Because the subjects of ocean engineering can be divided into ocean resource and ocean space developments, we are dedicated to the research and education on coastal and harbor engineering, ocean and environmental engineering, structural and materials engineering, geotechnical and construction engineering. Especially, as the first ocean engineering department in the Korea's history, ocean construction, marine environment, and disaster prevention programs have been of our primary concern.
It should be emphasized here that this BK21 FOUR is succession of the two previous projects - the so-called 2nd Stage BK (Brain Korea) from 2006-2012 and BK21 Plus from 2013 - 2020. These projects have made not only the department improve quality of education, the opportunity of scholarship, and the facility of experimental study but also graduate students widen their research fields and accordingly contribute to relevant science and technology, regional industry, and global societies.
In the front line of the 21st century, we are willing to seek the fruitful outputs of the current project, which are much more than the ones in the previous projects not only in terms of research quality but also in the respect of blue-chip education system. Consequently, we strongly believe that the department and its university will constantly contribute to the development and conservation of ocean.
