Welcome to the Division of International and Area Studies at Pukyong National University
Pukyong National University’s Division of International and Area Studies was established as a European Studies Department in 1995. Afterwards, in 1997, our division was expanded by adopting new education and research major programmes covering three major world regions―European Studies, North American Studies and Northeastern Asian Studies (later changed into Chinese Studies Major in 2009, and the Chinese Studies department was separately established in 2017).
Our division trains students into international affairs experts based on interdisciplinary global studies. Since 2016, due to Korea’s growing international standings and the changes caused by the 4th Industrial Revolution, our division has been reorganised by offering two major tracks―Global Studies and International Development Cooperation―in order to advance further from the current Area Studies Programmes and to explore various issues around the world such as sustainable development. Our division comprises 12 faculty members, 300 undergraduate and 40 postgraduate students.
Based on the motto of ‘infinite pioneer spirit’, our division has won numerous grants from the Korean government, such as the CORE project from the Korean Ministry of Education in 2016 (approximately 2 billion Korean Won per each year), LINC+ in 2017, Humanities & Social Science Project (1.2 billion Korean Won for 6 year-period) and BK21 Project in 2020 (2.1 billion Korean Won for total). Such funding has been implemented for scholarships, second-language education, global field research and other research supports.
Our division attempts to strengthen the bond between current students and alumni to become a prestigious division around the globe. Our division has 1,700 undergraduate alumni active in various fields such as journalism, government offices and business. Our division has operated an annual alumni mentoring system, strengthening the solidarity among alumni organisation members.
High-quality educators foster students’ potential for showing their abilities in the end. Based on this foundation, our division will continuously support our students for them to become kind and talented global citizens. Our faculty members will do their best to achieve this goal. We invite all of you to join our division’s pioneer spirit.
